An Injection-Locked Laser for Ion Trapping

Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics

Katz, Rena

The Quanta lab develops ion trap technology aimed towards a scalable quantum computing architecture. A quantum bit can be created using the transition between the 5S1/2 and 4D5/2 atomic states of the Sr+ ion. This transition is stimulated by a wavelength of 674 nm. The lab has a laser that outputs at this wavelength, with a frequency accurate to within 1 Hz. The existing laser lacks sufficient power for some applications. Injection-locking uses a secondary laser diode to amplify the signal of the existing laser. The amplified laser will be used to demonstrate the Mølmer-Sørensen quantum gate.
